– Litany (7:06) –
(Pietro Cottone)
This song is about witch-hunt, both literally and metaphorically. It is about a charming woman, who was accused of being a witch and burnt at stake by the Catholic Inquisition. The woman engages in satanic rituals dancing through the trees of the wood, singing a litany around a fire and evoking her Lord. During a similar ritual, but more violent and homicidal, the woman will be burnt at stake by those who had accused her of witchcraft, while they were invoking their Lord in a purging litany. More generally “Litany” is about persecution of people with less commonly accepted ways of being or living. This song is about how human beings are often incapable of greeting differences in minorities resulting in persecution and violence rather than acceptance and integration.
Lyrics:
Her voice can blur your mind
Her eyes read inside your feels and thoughts
Her gaze can steal your soul
Her lips make you crave the brush of kisses
At night when the moon is high
And the wind is whistling harsh
You can find her dancing through the shades of trees
A droning litany
Gives the rhythm to her limbs
Gives the rhythm to her tempting body
Her voice can charm your heart
Her smile scares you and makes your blood run cold
Her gaze conceals a lie
She sold her soul to the Lord of Flies
At night when the fog is tight
And the wolf is howling far
You can find her twitching, screaming and spelling Lord
A chilling litany
Moves her body through the trees
Moves her body nude around a burning ring
“I believe in God, the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
And born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died, and was buried;
He descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to heaven
And is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
The holy catholic church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
And the life everlasting.
Amen.”
At night, they came from the dark
They accused her of witchcraft
She was chained and tortured in the name of Lord
A purging litany
They sang around a burning stake
They sang while she was twitching, screaming inside the flames
Her voice can blur your mind
Her eyes read inside your feels and thoughts
Her gaze can steal your soul
Her lips make you crave the brush of kisses
At night when the moon is high
And the wind is whistling harsh
You can find her dancing through the shades of trees

Gives the rhythm to her tempting body
